Sparks also served on the TMEA All-State Jazz Band selection committee for several years, adjudicated jazz band, and drumline competitions. Some of his students have become leading drummers, such as Taku Hirano, who served for Bette Midler and Fleetwood Mac; Marci Chapa, who served for Beyonce; and Eric Harland, who played for the SF Jazz Collective.
